Rescued Dogs Make Great Family Pets

Whether you are considering becoming a first time dog owner or adding a new canine member to your household, consider a breed-based rescue organization as a great source for your new pet. The advantage of selecting a pet from a breed-based organization is the foreknowledge you have about your pet's personality. Although your dog may not be AKC registered for that breed, he or she will be primarily characterized by it.

You should begin your search for a dog by doing some basic research on individual breeds. In addition to considering size, you should think about exercise requirements, guard or watch dog behaviors, and hereditary diseases that may be associated with that breed. You should be honest with yourself about your willingness to housebreak a puppy or provide an environment that includes daily walks or outdoor play time. Once you establish your basic requirements, select a breed that typically exhibits the desired characteristics.

The breed-based rescue organizations, such as The Golden Retriever Rescue, have potential pets available including puppies, mature, and senior dogs. The rescue organizations usually provide medical and foster care and can tell you about individual habits and personality from direct experience. In many cases, they will know how the dog reacts to other dogs in the home, young children, and cats. Rescue association will check their dogs for illnesses and heartworm. They provide treatment when necessary and neutering before a dog is placed on the eligible list. On organization websites, you will be able to see pictures of the available dogs and get information about their behavior in their foster home and any special needs or considerations.

Dogs come to rescue organization because their owners can no longer care for them. They are not bad, sick, or misbehaving dogs. There are many reasons why someone must give up a pet such as: illness, moving to a new location that does not allow pets, a new baby in the house, or a change in financial circumstances. These owners are being responsible and trying to ensure that their pet has a good home. Most rescue organizations also maintain contact with local shelters and will save breed dogs from euthanasia when it is believed that the dog is a viable candidate for adoption.

Rescue organizations go to extraordinary lengths to make sure that your family and your new pet are well matched. There are rescue organizations for most AKC recognized breeds. You can find one close to your home through your vet, the yellow pages and on the internet. The American Kennel Club maintains lists of breed specific rescue organizations organized by state. Although adoption procedures vary among organizations, the following activities are fairly standard. In your initial contact with the organization, you will register and provide basic information about your expectations and the environment you will provide. A preliminary phone interview or home visit may be conducted to allow the caring folks from the organization to ensure that you are worthy of being a caregiver to one of their special dogs. The organization really wants you and your dog to be happy together rather than just placing a dog to decrease inventory.

When you have selected a dog that you want to become a member of your family, the rescue organization may schedule a visit between you. They want to know about the environment you will provide. If you have other pets in your home, there may be a supervised meeting to determine if there are potential compatibility problems.

Rescue organizations are usually non-profit and staffed with volunteers who are also pet owners. There is a fee for adoption that typically ranges from $200 to $300. The process to adopt from a rescue organization may seem lengthy and involved, but, the organization exists to protect their dogs and ensure that new homes and families work out well for both the dogs and the new owners. You benefit greatly from their stewardship because you get a pet that is matched to your needs and is ready to share his or her unconditional love with you.

Adopting a Pet - What a Great Thing to Do

Have you ever thought about getting a pet? Many people go into the pet stores and see all those adorable little animals and want to buy one right away. I know I am a sucker for the cute cuddly puppies. If you really look around a pet store and look at the conditions that the animals live in, it should make you think twice about buying from a pet store.

There are so many shelters for so many different types of animals. Animal shelters aren't just for dogs and cats. If you do some research you can find a shelter for just about any kind of animal including a hamster or guinea pig all the way to bigger farm animals such as horses or goats.

Adopting an animal from a shelter is a very rewarding experience. My family and I just did this in April and coming from personal experience, the dog we got is the best dog I think I have ever owned and I have always had dogs so I have had quite a few. I was so impressed with the local shelter that we got our dog from that my husband and I are going to start volunteering there. The shelter was much cleaner than any pet store I have ever been in and the people at any shelter take these animals in because they care about animals, not just their bottom line.

Adopting an animal from a shelter is usually cheaper than buying one from a pet store and a very big added bonus to adopting is that you know the animal you are getting has been looked at by a vet. Most if not all shelters have their animals seen by a vet and all the proper vaccinations done before an animal can leave the shelter and all animals have to be spayed or neutered before they can be adopted. Both of those things are huge incentives to adopt because you know you are getting a healthy animal.

Adopting a pet is one of the most rewarding things you could ever do. You help save the life of some poor defenseless animal and you get a loving companion in exchange for your kindness. Adopt a pet today!

Adopt a Guinea Pig - It's a Great Way to Acquire a Unique Pet

Lots of new guinea pig owners had no idea that you could adopt a guinea pig. As a guinea pig lover I'd like to introduce my readers to this possibility.

March is the official ASPCA adopt a guinea pig month. I like to think that any month is a good month to adopt one of these adorable, cuddly pets. You would be doing both yourself and them a favor by considering this option.

Every year many of these pets are brought to animal shelters and rescue organizations. You probably had no idea. These animals were not given up because they were problem pets. Their owners just couldn't care for them properly and had the decency to place them where they had a chance to find a loving home through an agency.

There are many advantages to adopting a guinea pig through an agency or organization.

You can be sure to get a healthy pet. The rescue organizations and animal shelters are staffed with knowledgeable individuals that  make sure each guinea pig is healthy and thriving before they are adopted.
They are able answer all your questions and help you get started in the right direction.
The pet handlers with the organization will be familiar with their individual personalities and will help you choose one that will make you a great pet.

It's not common knowledge that the influx of guinea pigs into shelters has increased every year. This presents a problem for the organizations and an opportunity for you. It's a win, win situation for all parties when they are able to place one (or two) of these wonderful pets in a good home.

Not to change the subject but as a side note guinea pigs make better pets when they have company. Consider adopting two. It isn't really any more work caring for two than it is for one and they will be much happier.

Before heading out to one of your local pet stores to purchase your new pet why not check around in your area for the possibility of adopting one. It's a worthwhile alternative to a pet shop. I'm sure your piggy will be glad you did.

Check with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for the possibility of adopting a guinea pig. They should be able to help you one way or the other. Also try the Internet for adoption resources. Use a Google search query "adopt a guinea pig sources". One of the first links that come up will have guinea pigs for adoption.

Brian M Parker has raised guinea pigs from his childhood. These wonderful creatures provide a lot of pleasure if you take the time to learn how to properly care for a happy healthy pet. Brian owns and maintains the "Happy Healthy Guinea Pig Information", website GuineaPigInformation.net. You can visit his site for a free mini-course on guinea pig information. Cyber Pet Adoption - Great Fun For Your Kids

Virtual pet adoption (VPA) allows your kid to select a pet from various kinds of virtual pets found on the specific site you have selected. If they are interested in a dog or a cat, you'll get a wide variety of breeds, but you will also get some weird kinds of pets such as exotic and unusual monsters also at most VPA websites.

After you have located a website for cyber pet adoption, you simply have to register on the site and your kids can play for a long time with their virtual pet. There are many kinds of VPA sites online, and a few sites levy a small fee for the service. Also check the site properly as few sites have been designed only for kids while others are not.

The pet that you get through a virtual pet adoption for your kid will necessitate your kid to look after and play with it; for which the kid should be logged on the site. The virtual pet lives in a virtual world online, where your kid has to go to play with it, and look after it. Your child must give food and water to the virtual pet and should look after it during illness. Most sites also have the choice of purchasing clothes for your pet on the site. Your child can also enjoy constructing a pet home and sending it to work.

One of the major benefits of this hobby is that most of the sites are designed for this and they also help educating kids through learning games. Your child can participate in quizzes and play educational games in these sites. Some virtual pet adoption sites provide social networking facilities so that your kid can network with other children on the site.

Virtual pet adoption actually teaches your child two things simultaneously, the first being the liability of pet ownership and the second how to survive in an online world while navigating their pet's virtual city.

If you desire that your child should play in an educational online atmosphere, cyber pet adoption is the solution.

Pets As Holiday Gifts: Not A Great Choice

Pet shops and breeders make a huge amount of money during the winter holiday season. That's because people believe that puppies, kittens and exotic pets make great gifts. Just the thought of you, a loved one or close friend receiving a bundle of pet joy during the holiday time warms your heart. However, most people end up cooling off to the idea real fast once they discover all the work involved in caring for a new pet. This is especially true during the winter holiday season when visitors stop by frequently, parties are scheduled, guests stay overnight and there is never enough time to do everything you need or want to do.

Each year animal shelters are filled with unwanted pets before and after the holidays. Before, because people that decided to purchase or adopt pets during the summer or fall suddenly realize that they have no one to watch the animals while the make merry. They can't be bothered with the care, feeding and training involved when there are so many holiday errands to run. After, because once the cuteness wears off and a rug or cage has to be cleaned, or the food and veterinarian bills start piling up, the pet is no longer a welcomed member of the family.

I have created a list of suggestions for people that want to purchase or adopt a pet for themselves or someone else over the holidays (it can actually apply anytime):

1. Purchase or adopt a pet for the right reason.

Do you or the person you're giving the pet to really want that pet? People sometimes adopt pets as a stop gap measure for other things happening in their lives. A break up, a divorce, illness, to feel better or wanted: these and many other things are not good reasons for new pet ownership. Neither is the stirring of a bruised conscious. Just because the local shelter goes on TV and displays pets they say must be adopted or they will be destroyed doesn't mean that you are the best candidate for such an adoption. Emotional response is also a bad reason to bring a pet into your life.

Purchase or adopt a pet because you really want one and are willing to take on all the responsibilities involved. Think of the pet as a person you are inviting into your home. Are you willing to share your place with a pet, take care of it and pay the expenses involved with that care? Can you spare the time to spend with your pet? Many animals require socializing with their owners on a regular basis. The alternative can be negative and destructive behavior to get your attention. Remember, pets can't talk. They can't ask for you to spend time with them.

2. Never surprise anyone with a pet.

Although I am sure that your heart is in the right place when it comes to surprising someone you care about with a cute pet, it's a really bad idea. Pet ownership is something that should be given a lot of thought, discussed and evaluated beforehand. Just because someone once told you they might like a cute pet to keep them company doesn't mean you should arrive with one at their door during the holidays. The holiday season is a terrible time to begin pet ownership. It's just too busy for most people to be able to handle, train and care for a new pet.

No one likes discussing it, but if a pet dies shortly after coming into your home that's a holiday memory that is likely to last for years. It happens more often than you think and this is yet another thing to consider before you purchase or adopt a pet.

3. Decide if you can take on the financial responsibility of a pet.

We can no more predict the future health of an animal than we can predict our own future health. You might purchase or adopt a pet and find that it becomes sick within just days of arriving in your home. Sometimes this is caused by a change of location. Many types of pets are creatures of habit and do not adjust well to sudden changes in their environment. Pets that are already on medications are particularly vulnerable.

It's a dirty little secret that many pet stores and even shelters that offer dogs and cats give them large amounts of antibiotics to get or keep them healthy. Once they leave that environment and the antibiotics stop, the animals can take a nose dive in terms of their health. Are you ready to spend hundreds of even thousands of dollars for emergency veterinarian visits, procedures, medications or even surgeries? If not, pets are not for you.

4. Read the fine print on contracts or agreements before you purchase or adopt.

Many pet stores and shelters have limited return policies and those that do often have fees. With few exceptions, you can't test drive a pet. Once you leave the store or shelter, the animal belongs to you. Pet stores and shelters are very strict when it comes to these matters and others outlined in your agreement or contract with them. Read and re-read any purchase or adoption agreements or contracts before you sign on the dotted line and make sure you can live up to them.

Due to the irresponsibility of many pet owners, most cities and towns now have laws that require pet owners to vaccinate or have some type of veterinarian procedures completed as part of their pet ownership. Failure to comply with these laws may cause confiscation of the pet with any and all fees involved (including care, housing and vet fees incurred by the jurisdiction) passed on to the owner. Penalties for failure to comply or pay fees can result in everything from driver license suspension, to receiving a ticket or summons or even arrest on felony charges.

5. Discuss pet ownership with everyone living in your home before you take the plunge.

When you bring a pet into your home, it becomes everyone's pet. While you may think of it as being yours, everyone living with you will probably have to make some sort of an adjustment in their lives to accommodate your new pet. Not everyone may be willing to do that. This can cause arguments and disagreements. That might mean that your pet will eventually end up homeless and that is so unfair to any animal. Discuss pet ownership with your family before you purchase or adopt. Spell out any and all changes in lifestyle that may result from having your new pet in the home.

I am not trying to be a Scrooge by keeping anyone from pet ownership by purchase or adoption. However, the things I have shared with you are based on what I have seen happen in the lives of my family and friends over the years. I am hoping to help you and any pets you might think about bringing into your home to avoid disaster. Happy Holidays!

Pet Fostering and Adoption - What a Great Way to Help the Many Pets in Need

Many people love animals and would like to do more to help them. Here's a way in which you may consider to do this. Pet fostering isn't a new concept, but it is growing. Pets who are in shelters for whatever reason, may not always be ready for adoption when they first arrive. They are in need of some medical care and recovery time. They may need help in becoming social again.

The rise of animal abuse is heart clenching and to think of an abused animal being put down do to some ignorant act is sad. If however, these little survivors were given a chance to recover before adoption, wouldn't that be a great way to show they still have a chance to be loved!!

An animal that has been abused may have to undergo several treatments on their road to recovery. While they recover though, being in a cage where no one can give them all the loving they need only limits their ability to fight and recover, giving them a place with loving people to care for them however, does incredible things for them.

These little fighters learn that they can be loved, that it's safe to love, and this gives them the desire to live. A three legged dog in a shelter recovering may simply not want to relearn how to walk or even care to play. Putting this same dog into a loving home for his recovery will allow him or her to see what love is, and gives him a chance to learn how to walk and play all over again. The gratitude he shares is more repayment than you could even hope for.

Prime Minister Steven Harper and his wife currently foster cats and have found it fulfilling. You don't have to be a political icon or celebrity though to offer your home as a fostering home.

There are a number of programs set up for pet adoption. You will need to learn some of the skills involved in caring for specific needs, but the greatest skill you can offer is love and patience. These animals don't deserve the reasons they are in the shelter, but they do deserve every chance of getting that second chance for love.

When the pets are ready they are placed for adoption. This is a great reward when you think about it. A pet who may have succumbed to her injuries survives because a foster family believed in her, now recovered she can go to a new home where she will live the rest of her days loving and being loved.

Fostering and adoption is something to consider if you love animals, there is a huge need for animals in this situation, why not consider fostering as a way of letting these little fighters know, they are worth it!! The reward of seeing them win, is all the reward you will ever need!

While the rest of the world has sped into the digital era, we've seen a growing demand for publicity on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook erupting with new faces and personalities. And, like their human counterparts, our dogs want a place in the public eye as well.

While blogs have been a great outlet for publicizing our favored friends and associates, social media has become a great source for really defining the personality of a dog and even providing a little insight into what they are thinking.

Dogs as entertainers

We've all seen dogs rise in fame, often maintaining their actual names in the movies they're acting in.?https://twitter.com/#!/cookiedabooboo?is a well renowned dog actor, making appearances on such television shows such as Desperate Housewives. But to really give the dog a voice, this Twitter site is dedicated to providing a voice for Cookie and effectively creating a character that enjoys telling its owner what to do (which many of our spoiled dogs enjoy doing).

Oprah is the rather foul-mouthed advocate of rapper 50 cent, often holding nothing back when it comes to offering an opinion. But, this just goes to show that even dogs have a few rights that we humans take for granted when it comes to speaking our minds. You can find this furry and funny minded dog on Twitter as ?http://twitter.com/oprahthedog. It's definitely a site for anyone that enjoys a few laughs and entertainment.

Dogs in politics

One rare and rather surprising area to see a dog in is politics. While it's a rather unique situation, dogs such as Sutter Brown have found their way into the top ranking official statuses of the world, and exhibit their profound desire to really press their views on life. Found at?http://facebook.com/sutterbrown?on Facebook, this four-legged politician really dishes out the facts and views regarding how a dog interprets the world, and provides plenty of insight concerning bone taxes and other doggy political processes. Combined with both humor and fact, this is a definite like for any dog owner.

Dogs represent: tumbler, schools, even blogs

Dogs are found in every aspect of life, even business and education. So, to provide a little doggy insight into these worlds, Tumbler has actually put a doggy advocate as a spokesdog for their business.?http://tommypom.com/?is a site dedicated to the furry Pomeranian Tommy. Though small, this dog has a big voice, helping to endorse one of the fastest growing social media sites on the internet. Filled with pictures and blogs, you get a dog's-eye-view of what it's like working as an intern for Tumblr.

http://twitter.com/sullyburger?is a site dedicated to the cutest of cute puppy mascots for the site Cuteness.com. This furry representative flaunts his cuteness to really provide the character that is needed to endorse a site that focuses on being cute. And what dog isn't?

http://twitter.com/butlerblue2?is a Twitter site dedicated to the Butler University of Indiana, promoting the importance of education and its value to society. Full of school spirit, this bull dog is an excellent representative of determination and effort that is needed to accomplish any goal you set your mind on- for both dogs and people. He's definitely something to like and admire, even if you don't attend their school.

Dog's life

We can never forget those that represent the everyday dog-life, which is where such sites have dedicated time and effort to supporting their four-legged friends like Rocky the Chihuahua. These tales tell of Rocky's adventures with his companion, and while fictional, are actually based on the everyday events that this clever pup enjoys taking advantage of. And you'd be surprised at what dogs can really get away with when you spoil them. The blogs?http://blog.porchpotty.com/category/the-adventures-of-rocky/?really give an exotic outlook on the world through a dog's eyes as they interact with companions and friends alike. Rocky is definitely mischievous in real life, and definitely shines as a bit of entertainment for the everyday dog lover.

Another site that definitely says: I think like a dog, is?http://twitter.com/mikeythebrat?, who does indeed live by his name. Full of sassy quotes and some great humor, this Twitter site is a favorite if you want to put a few words in your dog's mouth.

Throughout the internet, you can find dogs representing anything from products to politics, giving dog owners something to really enjoy through a slight bit of dog humor and some interesting facts. These sites really give an effort in creating a dog's character and personality, allowing us humans to associate ourselves with some of our best friends in the world: our dogs.
