People sometimes don't realize that they have an option to adopt a dog rather than buy a dog from a breeder. It's incredibly easy to adopt a dog from a local dog shelter or dog rescue center. And there are plenty of good reasons to adopt a dog rather than pay an arm and a leg to purchase a dog.
The number one reason to adopt a dog is knowing that you are saving a life. Millions of homeless four-legged cuties are gassed each year because there simply isn't enough room or resources at dog shelters and dog pounds to give them the proper care. It's quite sad but when nobody claims these dogs there isn't anywhere else for them to go and there is a constant influx of new dogs coming in off the streets so space is limited.
You can make a difference when you adopt a dog rather than buy dogs at pet stores. People are somehow convinced that they must buy purebred puppies and puppies and dogs from shelters or pounds are damaged goods. This couldn't be further from the truth. Many of the more popular pet stores and chains purchase their puppies from breeders that operate puppy mills. The mothers of these pups are kept in deplorable conditions where disease and illness are rampant. It's not unusual for the mothers to be abused, unloved, malnourished, unexercised and bred so repeatedly that their bodies eventually give out and they can longer produce a litter. The pups themselves are often a product of in breeding and commonly come with a string of health issues and bad genes. Sadly the transaction is complete when these problems arise and the dog owners are hit with expensive veterinary bills and a sickly dog.
Meanwhile, the dogs available at pounds and shelters are incredibly loving, playful and in need of affection. They are extremely grateful to be rescued, someone on staff is actually tending to their needs and health issues, and many times, depending on the circumstances, they are potty trained and have also gone through obedience training. Their reasoning for being homeless isn't always troubling. Sometimes they are there because of a death in the family, the introduction of a new baby to the household or a family move that wouldn't permit a dog. When you adopt a dog you are practically saving them from doggie death row. Some shelters will only keep their dogs for a matter of days or weeks before sending them to their death.
Whenever you adopt a dog or puppy from a pound or shelter you are also paying considerably less than what you would pay at a pet store or a breeder. Not to mention that these dogs are practically ready to live in their new home without the troubling house training, accidents and behavior issues that come with puppies.
