Thinking About Adopting a Sugar Glider? 10 Questions You Need to Ask Yourself

Adopting a pet is like signing a contract. It means that you are committing yourself, some of your time and energy to that pet and give it the best life possible while this animal under your care. If you are not ready to sign that contract, maybe you are not ready to be a pet parent. Adopting a sugar glider is no different.

Why do people adopt pets?

Mostly because they love them and realize that the company of a pet will bring them more joy in their lives. However, sometimes people have adopted a pet on a hunch without thinking about the pros and cons, and then realized that taking care of a pet is just too much for them. At this point they are desperate and want to get rid of that pet.

This is why, before you adopt your sugar glider you need to know that like any other animal they need care and attention. They are not a piece of furniture or even a plant that you sit in a corner giving it water once a or twice a week.

Here are a few questions you need to ask yourself before you purchase a sugar glider:

1. Do I have at least 45 minutes of free time each day to dedicate to the care of my exotic pet?

2. Am I willing to learn more about a healthy diet to feed it every day?

3. Am I willing to clean the cage and dishes of my glider on a daily basis?

4. Have I ever taken care of a pet before, and how did it go?

5. Why is the reason why I want to have a sugar glider? Because I love this kind of pet or because it's a fade and it will look good?

6. Do I have pets that tend to not get along with other pets?

7. Is my landlord OK with me adopting an exotic pet?

8. Is it allowed in my state to own exotic animals?

9. Is there an exotic pet veterinarian in my area?

10. Do I know enough about sugar gliders to be able to care for one?

These questions are just a sample of the many questions you should ask yourself before you acquire a sugar glider. Adopting a pet is serious business. Pets are not toys and their well being should always be taken into consideration before you take the first step into adopting.
