Why You Should Adopt a Pet From a Shelter

A pet shelter is a great place to start looking for a pet. Animals can end up in the shelter for any number of reasons. Some of them may be strays who don't have any place to go. Sometimes an owner has to give up their pet because of illness or maybe the owner has died. Some animals are rescued from an abusive environment. Occasionally owners have to move and cannot take their pet with them. Some of these animals may have had a lot of loving care and are grieving for their masters. They cannot understand what has happened and why they have been abandoned. These animals are very lonely and are in need of a home. Some of them have been abused and have never known love.

There are a number of reasons why people look for a pet to adopt. Maybe they have just lost a beloved pet; maybe they have never had a pet and are looking for a companion; or maybe they have one pet and need to add another. Many people believe that a pet can help increase the mental health and quality of life of an elderly person.

The employees at these pet shelters become familiar with the animals and they know which ones are suitable for families with children and which ones would be good with elderly people. For instance, if there are very young children in the family you would not want to place a delicate type of dog with them. Also, an elderly person might find it hard to keep up with an active puppy. It has been my experience that a good shelter will be selective as to where an animal is placed. They want to place them in a home that is good for the animal and a good match for the people.

It is important to know if a cat has been litter trained. Employees will know which dogs need a lot of room to run and which are more suitable as lap dogs. It is important to know if a cat has been de-clawed. If they have, they should be considered a house pet. An outside cat needs their claws for protection. The people at the shelter will know what their temperaments are. Some animals can be shy or scared because of something that has happened to them and they will need to learn to trust people. Usually the employee will know something about the background of an animal.

If you are in search of a particular breed of dog you might check out the rescue shelters that specialize in a certain breed such as Shelties or German Shepherds.

Most reputable shelters check over the animals before adopting them out. They check them for diseases, ticks, ear mites and wounds. The shelter brings them up-to-date on shots for heart worm, distemper and rabies. Spaying or neutering is always an option. A lot of pet shelters have a "no kill" policy, but there is a limited amount of space at the shelters and they need to find good homes for the animals. You need to have a good feeling about the shelter and trust that what they are telling you about the animals is true. Be alert and keep your eyes and ears open. If you are not comfortable with the employees, the atmosphere or the care the animals are getting, you might want to check out some other shelters.
